'Slumdog' kids to get flats

The Oscar winning movie 'Slumdog Millionaire' may have helped the slum kids who had performed in the movie to earn a flat of their own.
Two of the kids cast in the film, 10 year old Azharuddin Ismail and 9 year old Rubina Ali who enacted the childhood roles of Salim and Lathika in the film live in the Garib Nagar slum in Eastern Bandra of Mumbai. With the children making the nation proud, the Maharastra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has announced gifting the two kids a flat each. This comes with the Mumbai Housing and Area Development Board (MHADA) taking initiative to allot flats to the kids under its 2% discretionary quota of the CM. --MP

Danny Boyle who won the best director for his film Slumdog Millionaire has paid tribute to Mumbai in his Oscar speech.
It was celebration in Mumbai too with millions glued to the the TV sets watching the Oscar ceremony in Los Angels. Dharavi slum dwellers too were thrilled with the overnight popularity of their slum which has been captured from their premises and projected to the world. --MP

The little kids from the Mumbai slums too are attending the Oscars.
This rare privilege has come to the little stars 9 year old Rubina Ali, and 10 year old Azharuddin Ismail who have become popular after their performances in Slumdog Millionaire which has bagged 10 nominations at the Oscars. The two had portrayed the childhood versions of the characters Latika and Salim in the film.
Boosted with the film's success the two of these slum kids were given a chance by the film director and producer to attend the Oscars function at the star studded ceremony in Los Angels on Feb22nd. --MP
SRK leaves hospital after shoulder surgery

Bollywood superstar Sharukh Khan who underwent a left shoulder surgery at the Breach Candy hospital in Mumbai has been discharged on Tuesday.
The actor had been long pending the surgery after suffering a tear in the shoulder muscle. He was operated on Monday soon after he returned from London after attending the premier of his film 'Billu'. Khan is recovering well and is adviced by his doctors to take rest for 4-6 weeks time. --MP
Recession hits State revenues

Recession is certainly taking its toll on the State government this year. Maharashtra has reported a revenue loss of Rs 1654 crore revenue, revealed State's finance minister.
"There is a deficit of about four percent of revenue in the current financial year, as the expected revenue was Rs 41,404 crore and we have received Rs 39,750 crore till January end," he informed. --MP
Threat to Kasab

The Mumbai police has stated that the lone terrorist alive, Ajmal Amir Kasab involved in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks were facing threats from various quarters.
There are also reports of threat from the underworld. However a top cop ruled out of any particular threat from the underworld. However he maintained that Kasab's life was in danger ever since he was captured alive and hence put on heavy protection. He has been kept under police custody in a highly secure and undisclosed pace for further interrogations with the case. --MP

Nagpur medical college to be upgraded

Nagpur Medical college in Maharastra is one among the 5 governent medical colleges which would get a facelift as its approved for upgradation to AIIMs level medical college proposed by the Center government.
The Union Cabinet has announced its decision to upgrade the exisiting medical college which would be set up as a part of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) programme. An estimated cost of Rs. 150 crores is projected on account of this, of which Central Government will offer Rs. 125 crore and Rs 25 crore by the State govt. --MP
Mumbai bound train passengers stranded

It was utter chaos at the Mumbai's Borivali station on Wednesday where protestors demanding for more train services took to the rails disrupting onbound services. The demand for additional trains between Churchgate and Borivili stations has been there for quite some time. But the protest took an ugly turn when the commuters went on to halt the train services and damaged the railaway gadgets. Many Mumbai bound passengers were stranded as the trains were suspended.
The police had charged a case against 32 people involved for disrupting and causing trouble to the Western railways. --MP
