Guilty in Srikrishna Commission report will be punished: Dasmunsi

Saturday, August 25, 2007 | AY
New Delhi, Aug 24 (ANI): Parliamentary Affairs Minister P R Dasmunsi today said the UPA Government would deal firmly with those found guilty by the Srikrishna Commission Report on the 1992-93 communal riots in Mumbai."No stone will be left unturned, and we will deal with those found guilty (by the Commission) very firmly," Dasmunsi told the Lok Sabha, in reply to a question raised by CPI (M) leader Hannan Mollah.UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi was "seriously concerned" over the matter, Dasmunsi said, adding that Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh had said the recommendations have been partly complied with and his government would soon take action on the remaining recommendations. The report had identified 31 police personnel as well as some others who engineered the riots.Mollah said that the delay in the report's implementation is "sending wrong signals to the minority community".Opposing the implementation of Srikrishna Report, the BJP said the Congress-NCP Government's attempt to implement the report after a gap of nine years was aimed at appeasing the Muslim community. On August 12, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said the report will be implemented. Many NGOs and associations have opposed the Government's decision to implement the report and have filed public interest litigations in the Supreme Court in this regard.Since the report is under the court purview, the timeframe for its implementation has not been decided. The one man Commission which was formed to probe into the 1992-93 post Babri Masjid demolition riots in Mumbai had indicted many politicians, including Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray and his senior party colleagues including Manohar Joshi and Madhukar Sarpotdar.Shiv Sena threatened to take to the streets if Maharashtra Government implemented the commission's recommendations. Shiv Sena has maintained all along that it was opposed to implementing the commission's recommendations. (ANI)
