Sensex hits new high of 15,733

Mumbai, July 23 (ANI): After trading flat for most part of the day, markets gained momentum in the last hour of trade here today, with the Sensex hitting a new high of 15,773 points.The benchmark index ended the day at 15,732 levels, up 1.1 per cent or 166 points. In the broader markets, the Nifty firmed up 1.2 per cent or 53 points to end the day at 4,619 levels.Leading the charge at the Sensex were Larsen and Toubro and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited. They zoomed 7.8 per cent and 7.1 per cent respectively. Hindustan Unilever at Rs 204 levels moved up five per cent on reports of the company mulling a buyback in its forthcoming board meeting on July 29.Bajaj Auto, Reliance Energy, ACC, Satyam Computer, ONGC, NTPC, Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank, Hindalco, Reliance Industries and TCS were some of the other notable gainers.However, Cipla at Rs 191 levels slipped 4.8 per cent by close. Infosys Technologies, ICICI Bank, ITC Limited, Ranbaxy and Ambuja Cements also slipped into the red.Among sectoral indices, the BSE capital goods index was the top gainer that zoomed 5.1 per cent or 661 points by close of trading session on Monday, television channels reported.Strength was also visible in FMCG. Shaw Wallace, Nestle India, Colgate-Palmolive and Nirma ended the day firm besides Hindustan Unilever.UTI Bank (down 3.8 per cent), ICICI Bank (down 1.5 per cent), Centurion Bank of Punjab (down 1.5 per cent), Punjab National Bank (down 1.2 per cent), Bank of Baroda (down 1.1 per cent) and Canara Bank (down 0.3 per cent) lost ground in the banking pack.Select technology counters came under profit booking on Monday. Mphasis shed 3.5 per cent to end the day at Rs 260 levels. Infosys Technologies, HCL Technologies and Financial Technologies also closed in negative turf.Mawana Sugars, Balrampur Chini Mills, Oudh Sugar, Bannari Amman Sugar, Dwarikesh Sugar, KM Sugar and Sakthi Sugars were the key losers in the sugar space. Earlier, the Sensex touched an intra-session peak of 15,773.37 points and a low of 15,477.91.Brokers say the market can reach the milestone of 16,000 points in a shortest thousand points journey. The shortest 1,000-point leap as of now is of just 19 trading sessions that the Sensex took to scale 12,000 level in April last year.The bourses, which had commenced the day a little lower in line with weakening global stock markets, picked up in the last 30 minutes of trading, brokers said.
